It was almost eight o’clock when Hector put his spoon down.
Mummy Chrys noticed immediately.
She always noticed when Hector stopped eating.
“What’s wrong?” she asked.
Hector looked at Chrys.
Then at Ada.
Then at Uncle Emeka, who was sitting at the other end of the table pretending not to listen.
Finally, he asked:
“Can AI make me smarter?”
The room became quiet.
Uncle Emeka slowly put down his glass.
“Which AI?”
“Artificial intelligence.”
“I know what AI means,” Uncle Emeka said. “I’m asking which one.”
Hector frowned.
“The one on Uncle Chrys’s phone.”
Chrys smiled.
“You mean ChatGPT?”
“Yes.”
Mummy Chrys shook her head.
“So this is what we are discussing at dinner now?”
Hector nodded.
“I asked it a question today and it gave me an answer before I could even finish thinking.”
Uncle Emeka leaned back.
“Exactly. That’s the problem with young people these days. They don’t want to think.”
Hector looked at him.
“But you use it too.”

A child who knows how to type:
“Write my homework for me”
is not necessarily AI literate.
A child who can say:
“Explain this concept to me, show me an example, and then give me a problem I can solve myself”
is beginning to understand how AI can support learning rather than replace it.
And a child who asks:
“How do I know this answer is correct?”
has learned something even more important.
Critical judgment.
“But Isn’t AI Just a Tool?”
Hector wasn’t convinced.
“So AI is just a tool?”
“Sometimes,” Chrys said.
“Like a calculator?”
“Not exactly.”
“Like Google?”
“Not exactly.”
“Then what is it?”
Chrys thought for a moment.
“Imagine giving someone a very powerful assistant who can write, summarize, explain, translate, brainstorm and create things in seconds.”
Hector’s eyes widened.
“That sounds amazing.”
“It is.”
“Then what’s the problem?”
“The problem is that an assistant can still be wrong.”
Hector laughed.
“How can something that knows so much be wrong?”
Mummy Chrys answered before Chrys could.
“Because knowing many things is not the same as knowing the truth.”
Hector became quiet again.
That sentence stayed with him.
Why AI Literacy for African Children Matters

African children are growing up at a moment when artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly embedded in education, work and everyday digital life.
UNICEF’s recent work on children and AI specifically highlights the need to prepare children for a world in which AI increasingly affects how they learn, communicate and eventually work. The question is not simply:
“Will African children use AI?”
We have already said it before AI literacy for African children matters. They already are.
The more important question is:
“Will African children learn how to use AI intelligently?”
Those are two completely different things.
UNICEF has also warned that simply putting AI technology into African education systems is not enough. Teachers, quality content, accessibility, local context and appropriate support all matter. Hector eventually returned to the table with a notebook.
“Okay,” he said. “If you were teaching me AI, what would you teach me first?”
Chrys looked at Mummy Chrys.
She nodded.
“Five things,” Chrys said.
1. Understand What AI Actually Is
Children don’t need to become machine-learning engineers before they can understand AI.
But they should know that AI systems are created by people and trained using data.
They should understand that different AI systems have different capabilities and limitations.
They should also understand that an AI-generated answer isn’t automatically a fact.
This is foundational.
A child shouldn’t think:
AI said it, therefore it is true.
The correct mindset is:

2. Learn How to Ask Better Questions
Hector loved this part.
“So asking AI questions is a skill?”
“Absolutely,” Chrys said.
A vague request often produces a vague answer.
A thoughtful request gives the system more useful context.
For example:
Weak prompt:
Tell me about Nigeria.
Better prompt:
Explain three major economic challenges facing Nigeria to a 12-year-old student, using simple examples.
Even better:
Explain three major economic challenges facing Nigeria to a 12-year-old student. Give one real-life example for each and then ask me three questions to test whether I understood.
Now AI is no longer simply producing information.
The child is designing an interaction that encourages learning.
Prompting is useful.
But prompting shouldn’t become the whole definition of AI literacy.
UNICEF’s 2026 consultations with African children found that some children highlighted prompt engineering, while many others emphasized broader transferable skills such as research and evaluating information. (UNICEF)

The goal isn’t to raise children who are excellent at talking to machines.
The goal is to raise children who know how to think with machines without surrendering their thinking to them.
3. Verify What AI Tells You
Mummy Chrys suddenly looked at Hector.
“If AI tells you that your grandmother was born in 1920, what do you do?”
“Ask AI if it’s sure?”
“No.”
“Ask another AI?”
“No.”
Hector sighed.
“Then what?”
“You check.”
This might be one of the most important AI literacy skills of all.

Children therefore need to develop the habit of verification.
That could mean:
- checking a textbook
- consulting a teacher

- examining the original source
- asking whether the claim can be independently confirmed
A child who knows how to verify information is much harder to mislead.
And that skill remains valuable even if the technology changes completely.
4. Protect Your Privacy
Ada finally joined the conversation.
“There is another problem.”
Hector looked at her.
“What?”
“You can’t give an AI everything about yourself just because it asks.”
Children need age-appropriate guidance about privacy and personal information.
They should learn to think carefully before entering information such as:
- passwords
- private family information
- financial information
- precise personal details
- confidential school information
- private photographs
- information about other people

5. Never Let AI Do All Your Thinking
This was the rule Hector liked least.
“If AI can write my essay, why should I write it?”
Uncle Emeka answered.
“Because one day your teacher may ask you what the essay means.”
Everyone laughed.
But the point was serious.
AI can make learning faster.
It can explain difficult concepts.
It can provide examples.
It can help students brainstorm.
It can provide practice questions.
But if a child uses AI to eliminate every difficult part of learning, the child may also eliminate the opportunity to develop the underlying skill.

Chrys opened his notebook.
“Suppose we don’t have an expensive AI laboratory,” he said. “What can a normal family actually do?”
The answer is simpler than many parents think.
AI education can begin with conversations.
Parents can ask children:
“Where do you think AI appears in your daily life?”
They might discover that AI is already involved in recommendation systems, search, translation, image generation, educational applications and other digital experiences.
Parents can then turn ordinary interactions into learning opportunities.

“So we’re teaching children how to use other people’s AI.”

“And the other?”
“Teach them to build.”

It was nearly nine o’clock.
Mummy Chrys began collecting the plates.

Hector finished the sentence.

The Future of AI Literacy for African Children

The future will not be determined simply by how many African children have access to artificial intelligence.
It will also depend on what they are taught to do with it.
UNESCO’s framework emphasizes responsible and creative participation in an AI-driven world, while UNICEF’s work in Africa increasingly emphasizes critical thinking, transferable skills, child-centred design and the need to avoid simply replacing human cognition with automated systems. We shouldn’t raise children who are afraid of AI.
We shouldn’t raise children who blindly trust AI either.
And we certainly shouldn’t raise children who believe that knowing how to operate an AI chatbot is the same thing as understanding artificial intelligence.
We should raise children who can think alongside machines while remaining capable of thinking without them.
That is what meaningful AI literacy for African children should begin to look like.
And perhaps, years from now, when Hector is sitting somewhere else with a machine far more powerful than the one we have today, he will remember the conversation that started at the dining table in the House of Chrys.
He will remember what Mummy Chrys said.
He will remember Uncle Emeka’s terrible joke.
And most importantly, he will remember the question that started everything:
“Can AI make me smarter?”
The answer was never simply yes or no.
The better question was:
“What kind of human will you become when you have AI beside you?”
